Tweeting for Cash?
It was only a matter of time.
A new opportunity for Tweeters to turn their contact list into cold, hard cash has finally emerged. Sponsored Tweets pays Tweeters to post occasional ads in their tweets on behalf of their clients, companies who wish to capitalize on your Twitter clout.
Depending on a Tweeter’s following, and niche, companies will offer from $1.00 up to $5.00 per tweet or more. The larger a Tweeter’s following, the more they can earn per post.
It works like this: A Twitter user with a minimum of 200 followers registers at Sponsored Tweets, and identifies the niche they tweet in. Advertisers can then browse for Tweeters, and make them an offer to tweet their product or service for a specified fee. The Tweeter then has the option to accept or deny the offer.
Heated debates have already hatched online, with Tweeters going beak to beak over the ethics of such a proposition. Some feel advertising to their followers is a great way to lose them, while others feel the occasional ad will have little effect on their following.
As with anything, they key will be in moderation. Those who post an ad now and again to a list of dedicated followers will probably not see many, if any, drop outs. For those who become a spam machine, attrition will likely come swiftly.
Advertisers will undoubtedly target Tweeters with the largest following, and a well defined niche. The average Tweeter will probably not get enough offers to alienate their followers, but enough to treat themselves to an extra mocha every month.
