Big Fish Games Closes Game Space and Affiliate Network

Many Big Fish Games affiliates woke up this morning to a message from the company when they attempted to access their Game Space sites. The message said the company was in the process of launching their exciting new affiliate program, and would be back online by 3:00 PM.

But at 3:00 PM, Big Fish affiliates logged in to find that their Game Space sites had disappeared, along with their entire networks of sub-affiliates.

Thousands upon thousands of network affiliates, and customer contacts, from whom, all those Game Space affiliates earned commissions, were gone.

Big Fish Games has changed their affiliate program to pay on direct sales. They will be paying 70% commissions. I guess that was the exciting part.

As for web sites to sell games from, well, affiliates will have to build their own. That, or they can refer people to Gig Fish Games’ main site.

Another exciting feature announced is their new “last touch” customer contact system. This feature allows affiliates to earn commissions on sales from their own sites or Big Fish’s main site, even of they had previously visited another affiliate’s link.

What?

In translation, unless an affiliate’s visitors are loyal only to them, their contacts could end up on another affiliate’s site, and that other affiliate will get the sale. The sale goes to whomever the customer last visited.

The good news is, there are now hundreds of thousands of Big Fish gamers who are up for grabs, opening up a whole new market. They are the customers who once belonged to all those hard working affiliates who just got filleted.

Time will tell what the fallout will be for Big fish, but I suspect that after a lot of carping from their affiliates, they will end up a tiny minnow in the big pond of online gaming.

I guess it is back to Pogo for me…

Canasta, anyone?

don’t forget “you’ll only earn money from your referrals for a short time and then 100% of the money will go to BFG” and “We can terminate your account at any time and not pay you anything!”

Emmy, thanks for bringing that up. I forgot to mention that in my post. Affiliates now only receive commissions on referred members for one year.

It will be interesting to see what happens to their growth over the next few months.

A small reminder about the %70 commision, they pay %70 of the net revenue, not the purchase which equals about %41 of the purchase. And because there are many affiliate programs that will pay %40 or more, therefore BFG is not attractive as before in terms of earnings. On the other hand the last touch things is a good change for the program.
These changes will work for new & small affiliates (at least for short term, after 1 year BFG gets all the customers) but definetely will hurt the old & bigger ones.

Thanks for complimenting me on my site. I came up here from google by chance, but like your blog as well.

By the way, i’ve find out the exact commision rate which is 40.6%…

Compared to old program my earning are stable for now, but I wonder how it will be affected in the long term. I would like to hear from other Bigfish Games affiliates about their income changes.
